How to use an RSS feed
RSS is a way of staying up to date with new content on a website (or websites) without having to keep returning to the web page. I can add feeds from all my favorite sites and add them to a reader... that way I can see all the headlines from all my favorite sites all in one place.
If you haven`t used RSS feeds before this `how to` will lead you through subscribing to a feed.
First of all, you need an RSS reader.
I recommend Google Reader... its a web-based (meaning you view all the feeds from your web browser rather than from a program on your computer) and its free. Always a bonus. :-)
Secondly, the RSS icon. Some of you may know what it is already, some may have noticed them but not known what it is and some will have never noticed them until now. Either way, the image at the top of the page is an RSS icon... Sites that provide a feed to their content will include them on there site somewhere as a link.
To subscribe to a sites feed you will need to locate the icon and click on it. once you do that, it will take you to a page with a list of all the recent content on that site. It might look a little like this. -->
For some, subscribing might be as easy as clicking on the drop down menu at the top and selecting their reader (if you use Google Reader, there is an option there).
If yours isn't in that list... don`t worry! You will need to copy the URL at the top of the page (see image for more info) and then add that URL to your reader. This will be different with what ever reader you are using but should be pretty straight forward.
Finally all that's left is to add more feeds and relax knowing that you aren't going to miss out on anything happening at your favorite websites. Here's a pic of my feeds to show you what it looks like.
